AP Options in Grades 10 - 12
The Advanced Placement (AP) Program at GEMS United School (GEMS US) offers 13 AP courses sponsored by the College Board in the United States. These AP courses are equivalent to first-year college/university courses and are intended for students who have demonstrated the academic ability, individual interest and required motivation to handle the extra workload and study requirements.
Students enrolled in AP courses take the AP College Board exam at the end of the course. Depending on the exam score and the college/university, students can qualify for course credit, course exemption or advanced standing. These exams are scored on a 1-5 scale. Depending on the school, scores of 3, 4 or 5 can result in college or university awarding credit, exemption from courses or advanced standing. Students should research individual colleges/universities to understand their policies in awarding AP credit.
GEMS US was the first school in the United Arab Emirates to offer AP Computer Science Principles.

The decision to take an AP course should not be taken lightly. When considering AP courses, students must carefully consider the extra time commitment these courses entail. Students should seek advice from parents, the course teacher, current students enrolled in the particular AP course of interest and their counselor. Students who enroll in an AP course are required to take the AP exam in May. (Note: that there is a fee for each AP exam).
Upon successful completion of an AP course, students receive 0.25 additional weight to their AP course(s). Any semester grades lower than a C- in an AP course will not receive the additional weighting. This also applies if a student fails to take an AP exam in May.
AP Exam Registration Requirements
At the end of the course, students are required to take an AP external examination that will be administered on campus. Students must complete a registration form and pay the exam cost of 460 AED per exam plus a 350 AED sitting fee (only for non-GEMS US students) payable by cash, check, credit card or bank transfer. Full payment is required at the time of registration (no later than October 3rd, 2019).
Please pay directly in the Accounts Office (Administration Building A008) at GEMS United School in Dubai Sports City. Unused or cancelled tests will be charged AED 150 for a restocking fee by College Board.
NOTE: The AED 350 sitting fee is waived for students attending a GEMS Global Network school unless the requested exam is scheduled on a Friday (United States History, Art History, Computer Science A, Computer Science Principles, French Language and Culture, and Statistics).
After registration has been completed a confirmation email will be sent to your email address. Within the email will be an access code (join code) for each course you have registered for. It is the responsibility of the student to sign in to myap.collegeboard.org, create an account (if you do not have one), enter the join code, and verify the course information. Upon successful entry into the AP class, additional resources and materials will be available.
This year the deadline to register for the AP examination is much earlier than in previous years. Registration and payment is due by: Thursday, October 3rd
